A Personal Note on Mudit Mehrotra: A Voice We Need, A Leader We Trust

I have known Mudit Mehrotra for a few years now (Working under his leadership in DMECA, and I can say with absolute conviction that he is one of the most selfless, committed, and quietly powerful leaders our maritime fraternity has ever produced.

What sets Mudit apart isn’t just his decades of experience or the senior designations he holds—it's the sacrifices he makes, often silently, to uplift and serve the maritime community.

In every conversation, meeting, or initiative, you’ll find in him a rare blend of wisdom, humility, and an unwavering passion for the future of marine engineering in India. He has shouldered enormous responsibilities not for personal gain, but for a cause larger than himself—be it mentoring young engineers, representing India at the IMO, or pushing for policies that safeguard both seafarers and the seas.

Now, as he contests the IMEI Mumbai Branch elections, joined by other distinguished DMETians, I feel a deep sense of hope. For once, we are not just electing representatives—we are empowering voices that will be heard at the highest levels of global maritime governance. This is more than an election; it's a turning point for the marine engineers of India. With Mudit at the helm, our future is not just in safe hands—it’s in inspired hands.

In shipping, few professionals embody resilience, foresight, and commitment to sustainability like Mudit Mehrotra.

With over 36 years of unparalleled service in India's maritime sector, Mudit has built a reputation as a seasoned technical expert, a mentor to many, and a passionate advocate for decarbonisation in global shipping.

⚓ Early Foundations: From DMET Kolkata to Sea

Mudit’s maritime voyage began at the prestigious Directorate of Marine Engineering Training (DMET), Kolkata, where he completed his Marine Engineering degree (1984–1988). A foundation built on discipline, technical rigour, and camaraderie—his years at DMET laid the groundwork for a life-long commitment to the shipping industry. He won Director's Best All Round Cadet award during passout.

He cleared his MEO Class I certification in 1994 and later augmented his managerial acumen with an Executive MBA in Finance from ITM, reflecting his drive to stay relevant in both engineering and strategic leadership.

Mudit’s professional journey began with The Great Eastern Shipping Company (GESCO) in 1989, initially sailing onboard crude carriers, tankers, and other vessels. His seagoing career spanned nearly a decade, culminating in his transition to the GESCO shore office in 1998.

In his current role as AVP – Regulatory Compliance, he is actively involved in tracking regulatory changes, liaising with authorities and classification societies, and representing the company at various national and international maritime bodies and associations.
